This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Markos Moulitsas Zuniga is the creator of the Daily Kos website, which has become the equivalent of Wikipedia for grassroots Democratic Party politics in the United States. The Daily Kos is a platform for amplifying the voice of politically progressive grassroots political activists, aimed mostly on influencing and commenting on US electoral politics. The site has drawn comments from both grassroots activists and highly-placed persons inside Democratic political circles such as former US President Jimmy Carter, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, US Senator Teddy Kennedy, US Senator Russ Feingold and many more.
The Daily Kos site runs on Free Open Source Software, of course.
In his interviews, Markos says that he would not have been able to achieve the kind of reach that he has attained without Free Open Source Software, which has provided him with the flexibility, power, stability, and reliability for which Free Open Source Software is known, all at very low cost. One of the Digital Tipping Point's main theme is that Free Open Source Software is lowering the barriers to entry in many industries, and Marcos is a great example of that trend. He was born to immigrant parents in the US, and then was moved with his family back to El Salvador, where he remained until 1980, when his family fled the war in El Salvador. He went on to attain two college degrees and a law school degree, and applied that same drive and ambition to creating a virtual publishing and broadcasting company in the form of the Daily Kos, all with very little initial financial capital.
Markos is commonly known as Markos Moulitsas, consistent with Spanish naming traditions, rather than Marko Moulitsas Zuniga.
